Often I am asked by eBay sellers, online auction marketers and people in general what they can do to source products should they not have anything to sell themselves.
If you’re thinking about getting serious about selling on auction sites such as eBay, Yahoo, Back Page, and even Craigslist consider the enormous potentialof becoming becoming a Manufacturer’s Representative.
What’s important to know is that the Manufacturers Representative is quite different from an affiliate. In fact, the manufacturers representative is the go to person, who can represent a product. Multiple products, or even entire product line.
Fact is, there are literally thousands of manufacturers worldwide who are looking for people to help them represent their products here in North America and abroad.
just because a company can manufacture a product, they must be able to sell it. Quite to the contrary. There are many variables to factor in including, branding, distribution channels, private labeling, multi-language brand identity, and in person representation of the product.
I’ll encourage people never to assume that just because someone has a product, or product line that they are selling the product. In fact you look on google and type of the word manufactures representative you would find that there are well over 24 million webpages that use that phrase.
Below are some simple steps that you can take to try and reach out to a Manufacturer’s Representative:
First, target a market in your chosen country or countries can identify a product line that is in demand and has good potential of selling. You don’t necessarily have to sell a commodity-based product, niche products are just as well, if not better to sell both in North America and abroad.
Second, did extensive research to see how much demand there is for a specific product or product line and seek to learn just how many companies may be selling that product to a specific geographical market.
Do not assume that eBay is the only place to sell products. eBay is only a small sliver of other markets that are available online.
It move you to do your research and find out if there is in fact demand for a particular product, or products that you are considering selling.
Should you discover that there is a demand for a particular product line, consider selling a product. But, it’s imperative that you have objective information on just how many companies and/or individuals may be selling a particular product.
Third, once you have identified a potential product line you want to sell, try to locate, who the original manufacturer of the product may be.
Fourth, pick up the telephone and contact the manufacturer, informing them about your intent, of wanting to sell their product to a specific market.
Here’s where it gets fun. Ask them if they have a manufacturer’s representative, who is representing this the sale of that product to a specific geographical market.
You would be surprised to find out that in many cases, manufacturers are looking for people to represent the sale of their product.
Fact is, you won’t know until you ask. It will move you to step out of your comfort zone and take a small risk by asking some simple questions.
Even if they say no, thank them for the information and take the time to send them a follow-up letter acknowledging that you are interested in selling their product.
Fifth, the key to converting using the follow-up. Take the time to revisit that manufacture and follow-up with them. Get names of contacts, and keep your name on their radar. You would be amazed at what can happen. He stay in contact with a manufacture over time.
